Club Colmcille, An Charraig Mhór, is one club which certainly has shown and enthusiasm for and commitment to the promotion of culture within the county. The records show that the club has participated in Scór na Nog and Scór Sinsear in every year since the competitions began.
Our clubs first recorded success was in 1974 when the club won two county titles – Clare Nugent in the Recitation and the quiz team of Teresa Loughran, Seamus Woods and Damien Woods. There can be little that our clubs involvement in the Scór competitions has made some contribution to the promotion of Irish culture in the area.
Our club was one of the first to put in place structures which ensure the development and promotion of culture.
A cultural Officer is elected at the AGM every year and heads up a sub-committee who are responsible for all aspects of cultural development within the club. Lawrence Kelly currently holds this position.
A more detailed account of culture within the parish and our club can be found in ‘The Carrickmore Tradition’ Volume 2: Chapter 13. Culture by Pat Daly.
